The Early Rumors (2020—2022)
Rumors of WhatsApp usernames first surfaced in 2020 when WABetaInfo discovered references to a "username" feature in beta builds. For two years, the feature remained hidden behind feature flags, accessible only to a small group of beta testers.
Development Phase (2023—2024)
In 2023, more concrete evidence emerged. Screenshots showed a username field in the settings menu, and strings referencing "wa.me/username" links were found in the Android APK. By 2024, Meta confirmed internally that usernames were a priority feature for the messaging platform.
Beta Testing (2025)
WhatsApp began limited beta testing of usernames in select regions in early 2025. The initial rollout focused on Brazil and India, where privacy concerns around phone numbers were highest. During this phase, the character limits and naming rules were finalized based on user feedback.
Public Rollout (2026)
WhatsApp officially launched usernames globally in 2026, allowing all users to create a unique handle. The rollout included full support for the WhatsApp Business API, enabling enterprises to adopt BSUIDs for customer communication.
What the Future Holds
With usernames now live, Meta is expected to introduce searchable directories, username-based group invites, and cross-platform username portability between Messenger and WhatsApp.
